It's awkward because he works for RMC, but RMC are giving different numbers. He is a terrific journalist, but he is an investigator, old school proper writer, not a transfer muppet. there are better peops at that than him.

Martial is not a natural scorer? Now I know you guys have only been paying attention for less than a year. His natural scoring ability is what caused Monaco to pay 5 mil for a 17yo kid with no pro experience. What he isn't is a natural 9. He's more like Benz in how he approaches his position.

Deschamps commented today on Martial... NT has let him go to Manchester for the medical. He also discussed the pressure that comes with being the most expensive French player ever... He just beat Zidane'a record.
The figure is 60 mil base and 20 mil in bonuses.

Re: Man Utd set to sign Monaco forward for €80m
Contradictory statement by Dan levy, another reliable french journo
"Martial fee is supposedly 50m euros + 30m in bonuses = up to 80m transfer fee for Monaco. Means Lyon to get around around 10m to start with."

Mourinho couldnt sign Stones, was told to go jogging by psg for Marquinhos, so turns around and sign some scrub Djilobodji from Nantes.

Tbf in the end united can afford much more and it doesn't matter what the price is.
If Martial doesn't work out, they can just say "oh well" and ship him off back to ligue 1 and won't lose any sleep over it.

Wenger was spot on.
There is more money (at PL clubs) than there are quality players to buy.
It's telling IMO that PL clubs in that situation choose to spend money just the same as if there were top players available, only on some random players.
Goes to show having to spend money is the main constant in PL club management, whether appropriate or not.
Wenger though

Man U is a publicly traded entity. As a result, they need to manage their growth prospects. In terms of market value for a public firm, the worst thing that can happen is for analysts to downgrade your growth potential. It massively impacts market value. So they lose more money by NOT spending money than overpaying IF they are in danger of getting their outlook revised
Woodward is thinking like a banker... And under this scenario, he's right. But it's a strategy that can cut both ways if the investments completely flop.

The title.is wrong btw. The total is definitely 80 mil. Only variable is whether the bonus is 20 or 30 mil.

Paying 50-80 millions ( whatev) is not the problem. It depends of what/who you get with that amount of money. I mean for that fee ( or a little more ) Man united could have get players such as Gotze, Kevin De bruyne, Reus, etc.. I know they needed a goalscorer but I wouldn't call Martial that , at least now.

So basically what we have here is the financial industry usurping common sense in football.
Well done Woody.

Re: Man Utd set to sign Monaco forward for €80m
LeBeninois.... That's from a football perspective. But just thinking in terms of public stock valuation, you just need to justify how the market is valuing you. Having cash sit idle is fine AS LONG AS your valuation is covered.
Man U may have been forced to pay dividends to shareholders if it hadn't invested the cash... And that's a whole other can of worms. Once you start paying dividends, you can't really stop.
Woodward is doing things that he's good at... He was.never hired for his football acumen.

If Woodie Wood pecker wasn't, as you say, hired for his football acumen, who is actually making the football related decisions at Utd?

Woody is chief executive though, technically he's van Gaal's boss no?
In any case I don't think a guy like that is qualified to run one of the world's biggest football clubs.

The CEO of a public company cares about one thing and one thing only... Stock price. He oversees the overall strategy whose intent is to maximize shareholder value. The nutts and bolts of it are delegated.
