It’s not just Tebas, it’s the refs, it’s the justice department and also the clubs that don’t charge or punish the racists. In this case the culprits were even pointed out to the ref. I think this is the 6th club that has done this, this season. And it must be pointed out again, this is happening in la liga, doesn’t happen in CL play.

As a Spaniard I’m embarrassed by this.

For sure Vinicius has to learn to control his temperament better, but as stated above, blaming the victim is ridiculous. Where were Mysyats and the naive one when this same thing was happening to Etoo.

Some cultural relativism is necessary.

Italy, Spain and many other countries do not accept the Anglo definition of what constitutes racism.   They just don't.  If you don't like it, leave.  Unless the country's society has a problem with the language used (which obviously they don't in Spain and Italy), it's not changing.

La Liga isn't going to take action unless Spanish society requires it of them.  And Spanish society doesn't see it as a big problem here otherwise the pressure would be intense and La Liga would be forced to react.

If Vini really can't handle it in Spain, he should 100% leave.

Post by sportsczy Mon May 22, 2023 12:25 am

I appreciate Bill being embarrassed by this and so would I.  I'm embarrassed by many things both in France and the US.  But I can only control my behavior, decisions and... how I vote + spend my money.   The last two parts drive political and business decisions.  Unless this becomes a political or business problem of enough significance, nothing will change.

Once enough people are outraged and there's an impact, then a reaction will occur... that's my only point.  In the meantime, Vini either has to develop a thick skin if he wants to stay or he should leave.   Nothing forces him to be subject to this.  He's not imprisoned.

And from personal experience, sporting fans on provincial teams screaming outrageous things to opposing players is par for the course.  I don't think it's better in the UK, France and Germany.   In fact, I know it's not better in the UK and France, having attended a lot of games in person there.

not a valid excuse/argument. The league goes wild when kanoute insists on covering a betting ad on his jersey, or the league offices get turned upside down and everybody lfp loses their marbles when the word Palestine is written on kanoute's jersey.

But when fans chant rasist remarks towards him its a societal problem they can't control. btw i'm not saying you're defending the league's actions or inactions; not trying to put you in that position. just pointing out how things operate in the sports world.

and in fairness i don't think tebas was president of the league at the time, but that again tells us how some things ($) are more important than others.

That simply is not true Sports. We even have laws against it. We are not as uptight as say Americans and some historical slang is acceptable. But calling someone a mono and adding monkey motions is over the top. One issue is clearly identifying the culprits to which justice department claims is their problem. And in the case at Atletico when the culprits were identified, the club after a week of protest gave them a weak penalty, banning the, from stadium and justice department not involved. The latter part is on Tebas!

Today for example when the culprits were identified they should have been removed from stadium before game resumed. But it was the liga rep at game that stopped the ref and a very weak public announcement was issued. That’s on club and liga (Tebas again).

Bottom line to me is Tebas and the clubs done want to do anything. And to have Tebas calling out Vinicius is just appalling, but we can’t expect anything from that incompetent asshole!

I honestly expected this reply, so did everyone else and I assume, so did Vini.

As for what Sports wrote, if Spain, Italy etc, were selling to themselves, sure. Continue being you I suppose. But Spain is selling La Liga as a product to the world market so whatever they feel locally means nothing or at least, very little.

The longer La Liga continues to not bring down the hammer on this matter, the faster they'll find their product be something not worth investing in.

I posted about this in the racism thread, but this seems to be where the discussion is occurring.

All I'm gonna say is this is a massive reason why I can't become invested in La Liga, no matter how many times I've tried.

I believe we can condemn the action itself and also realize vini needs to do his best irregardless. The two ideas can coexist. Also good point on benzema, dude did nothing to protect vini, big L as the captain. But the first thing that does come to mind for me is how to stop what’s going on. For all the shit America gets, I’d love to see consistent examples of fans calling opposing team members racial slurs, it’s an unfamiliar concept to me here.

Where are the sponsors in all of this? Who would want their brand to be associated with any of this?  It seems like they just stay quiet if they aren't being pressured by social justice activists and the far-reaching US media.

EA Sports La Liga 2022/23 Empty Re: EA Sports La Liga 2022/23

Post by Casciavit Mon May 22, 2023 7:03 am

Racism should never be condoned and the fact we still have to see these situations is upsetting.

But it isn't surprising. It's a problem the entire world deals with.

I don't think Vinicius complaining about it will cause any real change. It's an issue at a societal level.

But at least if heavy sanctions are imposed, fans would start thinking twice about their actions. Banning 1 or 2 fans for life isn't going to do anything. You need to fine the club and ban the entire home/away attendees for multiple games to send a message.

Perhaps then when those low IQ fans notice their teams play worse due to a lack of stadium support, and the club complains that their bottom line is being impacted due to a lack of attendance revenue then these racist fans might be a little more concerned about what they exactly spew.

That being said, I do understand Sports point. Rival fans are always going to find ways to wind you up. They're going to mock you. They'll insult you and your family during the game. They'll make fun of your physical appearance, and if your skin color is something they can throw a jibe at you with, oh they'll do that.

I wonder if those jeering fans even consider their behaviour to be racist. I'm sure if you went up to those fans they'd say they were just having fun and that it's part of the sport and they'd dismiss your 'allegation'. They would probably also say that Vinicius doesn't help matters either.

He's a very emotional player. Even when he's not getting racist abuse, he's always complaining to the refs and diving. He also has that Bruno Fernandes thing where since they're both really ugly, you notice them complaining on camera more than other players. I'm not even memeing here, but I suspect its contributed to Vinicius' negative reputation. Also, those low IQ fans now know what triggers him,  so they'll continue to throw racist jibes if they think that will lead to him playing worse and getting sent off.

Ultimately, football fans are very tribalistic, so I just can't imagine those Spanish fans suddenly having empathy for him. They probably saw that video of him crying and are licking their lips on giving him the same treatment. Laughing

Only way to deal with this right now is to impose heavy sanctions to scare them off. I don't think they'll learn otherwise. Giving soft punishments and just hoping the problem subsides over time as Spanish society evolves will lead to Vinicius potentially leaving the league IMO.

There is no black franchise player that'll want to come to us unless we get a grip on the situation. The racism that Vini has suffered has gotten so out of hand that I don't know what will happen the next time we play away. Our next away game is against Sevilla. Another ground where we have faced abuse.

The response from the LaLiga president is so tone def I am amazed he still has his job today.

I am in awe at our clubs complete radio silence while Vini gets abused physically and verbally nearly every game.

I don't think we'll lose him but I definitely think Vini's relationship with our hierarchy will get cold when he finally understands that for Flo it's all just business nothing personal. Until today Vini has seen the club as his family where he has grown up but with the way we have reacted to all this which I am ashamed of btw I wouldn't be surprised if Vini turned into another CR7/Ramos where he just haggles at every contract negotiation

Yeah Mbappe and his entourage has to be looking at what's happening to Vini and wondering when that'll happen to him if he signs with Madrid.

The way Tebas is handling this happening to the most bankable Black star in the league will definitely have a chilling affect on all other Black players as well, who likely have their own racism stories, but haven't come forward because they know nothing will be done about it, especially if it's happening to the top player in the league.

Well there are some positive actions being taken today.
1. Rubiales has condemned actions from yesterday and basically said all the things that Tebas should be doing.
2. perez has met one on one with Vinius offering him support
3. Valencia club has come out against the abuse and is proceeding with the evidence of the culprits leading to likely life time bans.

While it’s too little and too late, at least some are recognizing how bad this is. Tebas needs to be held accountable for this.
