Bullshit. They also make more money now because coefficients is one of the criteria for payout.

Currently for the PL money payout is based on where you finished the previous season. But in 18-19 historic nonsense will be a factored in.

Regardless of similar results United can finish 4th and still make more than the team the finished 1-3rd unless its Liverpool

Why did the other PL teams decide to agree to that?

It's a shocking system. Failing to reward those who have had recent European success will not help to improve the competition nor will the questionable method of distributing winnings.

That being said, got immense pleasure from reading the article. I haven't seen such anger on a page since the days of cyberman.

It looks as if at least the medium to smaller leagues want to try and take some action as this decision went through when the UEFA was pretty much leader-less and others but the ECA were not really asked.

It is moronic to add this historical merit thing, but that's what popularity of football (read: the money in it) leads to. The historically big clubs are the money-makers in the CL, mostly thanks to plastic fans. A Liverpool v Milan match is simply going to attract bigger interest than Napoli v Mönchenblahblah.

Borussia Mönchengladbach actually have historical merit, too

Looking at a 5 year spell is completely arbitrary as well so once again I don't see a problem with the new system.

What were you guys expecting anyway ? Your fans fail to show up at Etihad intentionally on European nights and boo CL anthem on a consistent basis, so much to the extent Poop is now forced to beg to your lot to fill the seats.
No wonder the UCL bigwigs are pissed at least in city's case.

Whereas in a Liverpool's, Man U's or  or Milan's case regardless the quality of football on display they know fans will throng the stands cos of our fanbase. After all these guys are greedy business minded bleeps (barring Gil of course ) and if they find their investment aint bringing enough profit they are bound to take drastic measures such as this.

Why is rewarding recent performance important? We're not talking about a sportsman who at some point won't be able to perform anymore. Clubs can and do change all the time. Why reward such an arbitrary time frame like 5 years?

I Agree, before the start of each Season Uefa should select 4 team at random to represent the 4 slots for La Liga, PL, Bundes, and Serie A.

Wait, this sounds like something you hears at Football games for kids where they all get a participation trophies. I take that back, recent performance matter.

Qualification for international tournaments isn't based on some vague "recent performance".
