what has happened to the art of defending these days. how many teams in Europe now are rock solid in defence. Liverpool man city and arsenal are poor at the back. man u are not great and only spurs and Chelsea are strong at the back in England. madrid and barca are not great at the back and even Dortmund in germany give goals away. defending in Europe for most parts is poor now.

Imo strikers are better . Personally I think it's a good thing. I'd rather see that than see the Art of attacking die ahaha.

Football is dying, Perez with his Spanish referee regime and FIFA stranglehold and Fakenaldo with his fake media reporting is killing football. And you all are just watching by.

We may be just watching by, but you are making money off it. Pretty clear which of those is the more immoral behaviour.

CL vice champion, lol. Pretty nice way of saying losing finalist.

Yeah so what ? Reaching a final should be something to be proud of especially when you lose by 1 goal against a great Bayern .

Defending is fine. Players' athleticism has just gone up by a ton over time (speed, strength, stamina, etc.)... and most players are now multi-faceted. Not too long ago, you only had to worry about 1-3 strikers having the ability to consistently score goals. Now, you have 3-5 players on the pitch who can score.

A lot more going on... and the tactics are less standard as well.

Puts a lot of pressure on a defense.

Not to mention that you can't sneeze on a player without it being a foul and a card.

The football powers to be are emphasizing goals because that's what fans want to see. Similar to what's going on in the NBA and NFL tbh.

Klopp's credentials are not in question for me, excellent manager. Just thought it was funny you said CL vice champions instead of losing finalists. Thought it was a real stretch in defending his past record (which really didn't need that much defending, he had a very good Dortmund career).

well, unique might have a point. when i look at the list of defenders who usually take the fifpro awards, i'm not impressed with most of them as defenders, and they're supposed to be the highly rated.

Art of defending has been replaced by fast paced action which provides more 'entertainment' to the filthy casuals.

Fullbacks are more often wingers turned defenders now while CBs are encouraged to go forward and build up play. Meanwhile more and more klopp-lites are emerging from the depth of abyss. You see some 40 year old manager getting attention just because he plays quick shitty shatta football in triangles using 5'4 midfielders. Might win the match 4-3 but all you hear is how amazing that manager is.

*bleep* that

The real managers are the likes of Allegri. This amazing quote by him yesterday.

That quote made me horny AF.

I am glad managers like Allegri are keeping the integrity of football alive. When you see a team go away and come back with a 1-0 win. It makes you love the beautiful game as it should be played. Purely.

This is why champions like Allegri are winning titles after titles while modern shitty-shatta enthusiasts are settling for plaudits  by random jobbers on twitter.

You can be spectacular and also bag 3 points. Football is way more dynamic than just picking up 3 points. Way way more.

I am calling you all out. I am sick of this bullshit. It's time to take back control.

Cruyff ruined football with his pipe dream. The true Karl Marx of football.

It's all about catenaccio. It's all about Helenio Herrera. If he is reading GL from heaven. Hope he is smiling at this post.

I will make sure your dream remain alive Sad

The art of defending died 2008~ when our lord and savior Phonyiola came into the scene. People got fixated on the possession and style so much that they thought they can chuck any old defender in there. Hence the rise of terrible defensive CBs: Ramos, Pique, Koscielny, Hummels, Coloccini, Javi Martinez, Thiago Silva, Kompany, Laporte and much much more.

Nowadays you can't find the classic defensive CB who can tackle, mark and defend. No, he has to either have the right foot of Xavi or the left foot of Iniesta to be rated. Its sad era we live in, where retweets of defender highlights are 90% longballs or passes from the back rather than actual defending. Its depressing because social media is partly to blame, just the other day my 8 yr old niece was looking at some highlights of Musacchio and said he was an incredible defender, told him to show me and he cycling passes between RB and LB. This is what inspires kids these days gents, its almost indoctrination.

Haha, great post ES.

But I disagree. I think defenders and defending is as good as always.

Just that attack is so much better than before.

Watch at any match pre 200's. You'll see much less organization and workrate, which should give you more goals.... but it gives you less goals because the attack is also way poorer.

Yes, teams focus more on attack, which open themselves a little bit more, but they are also way better defensively. Any top 2010's team would wipe Barça's dream team.
