Costa claims he won't be returning to Chelsea and only wants Atletico [Sky]

Do contracts even matter at this point

They do, but it comes down to business and sport. Handcuffing Costa diminishes the return Chelsea would get in a sale, sure they could sue him for breach of contract but again were looking at time and money versus sporting ability. Its usually not in a club's best interest to prolong such deals.

It really would only take one landmark case of a club going the distance legally to make life difficult for a player under contract to change things though. That's how the Bosman rule came after all.

Though setting a precedent by taking this further would only benefit the clubs, in an era where player power reigns supreme, shouldn't this be sought after? After all, it is a legal obligation.

I think that's a great question and to be honest, I think there are so many avenues to attack this from.

A club could take a player breaching contract to court, for example, for refusing to report to training or in a more severe case, refusing to play for said club.

Now lets say that a club is successful and it is a more severe case, the contract would in all likeliness be rescinded with the player being forced to pay damages but this is where it gets interesting.

How do you monetize damages? Lets say we have a player who helps the club win trophies, how do you put a number on that revenue? Lets say under contract, another club would pay 75M for him, how does a club benefit now from breaking the contract and having him then sign for free?

What I'm trying to get at, is it would be a difficult case to mount and it could very well take months, years to come to fruition. Guess what happens to that player's monetary value in that time, his sporting ability and his interest in pursuing such matters? They dwindle.

So, I think a more suitable solution is always just selling these cancerous players because beyond anything else its better for business. Another solution would be the club reporting a player refusing to play to UEFA who would then slam the ban hammer on such player basically giving them the option to report and play or be unable to sign for any UEFA regulated team for the duration of whatever is left on their contract.

I can't recall this ever being our issue to be honest. Our issue was last season, when we switched to a two man midfield of Pjanic-Khedira, we didn't have the legs to get the ball back. Real just happened to be the first and only team to expose this and now Lazio last week, albeit in a much less meaningful match.

You couldn't hold the ball in Real's half, that's a fact. Every time you tried to hold possession you quickly lost it. This was a big problem because Juve lost the ball before they could organize themselves in Real's half to block potential counter attacks. So every time Juve lost the ball and tried to press to win it back, they failed because they were never in position to press properly. I specifically remember those moments because of the way your defense reacted.

They reacted by dropping much deeper leaving oceans of space between the midfield and defense in transitions, which Real exploited. I believe the first goal resulted from that (correct me if im wrong).

How many chances did Juve create that game? I don't recall a single clear cut chance. Your only goal came from a wonder goal.

You couldn't hold the ball at all, which made the team run more, which made the team tired. Allegri said the same thing after the CL final, I believe. That issue was made even worse considering Real had a 4v2 central advantage lmao.

As for your recent signings, I assume Allegri is going for a different approach. You discarded Alves and Bonucci, players who are both incredible on the ball, and replaced them with De Sciglio and...?

You also bought Matuidi, Costa, and Bernardeschi. The way I see it, Allegri is building a more defensive and structured lineup, and will be relying on individual quality in the final third more than he did in the past few seasons.

It's a different approach, and it's also easier to develop a team in that manner, but will it finally lead Juve to a CL? That I'm not sure.

Post by Luca Thu 17 Aug 2017 - 20:38

We had an equally difficult time winning the ball back when it was lost and another, larger issue is that Real Madrid would seemingly instantly bypass our thin midfield and end up right onto our back line and that's a more concerning problem.

We also played a midfield two of Pjanic and Khedira against Real Madrid's tremendous trio and Isco who comfortably drops back into the channels.

Anyways, a one of match in which we were horrendously outplayed by a team significantly better isn't really the one to go off of, in my opinion.

We have greatly improved our attacking options, we have the best attack we have fielded in the last 10 years quite comfortably. What we don't have in our line up is legs in the midfield.

I do see your point, but I also think you're underestimating Pjanic. He is that Pirlo/Xavi of our team. What I, and other Juve fans, are hoping is that a player like Matuidi can free up relieve the defensive pressure of Pjanic to allow him to conduct the team going forward.

Bonucci is not replaceable and to a degree, Alves isn't either in terms of quality replacements on the market but last season's ceiling was getting battered in the CL final with what, Mandzukic as our starting LW? A double pivot of Pjanic-Khedira? I'm sorry but Real Madrid deserve that victory 10 times out of 10 and we have to hold that L. The difference between our starting 11s that night is quite clear.

Now we have refreshed our attack, we have retained Sandro, Pjanic, Higuain and Dybala who make up our most important attacking players. Pjanic and Higuain will be entering their second seasons and should have a great understanding of Allegri's tactics. In addition to that, we have added Bernardeschi and Douglas Costa as new options to call upon, thus also improving the depth in our attack- in which last season we had absolutely none.

Basically, we had two options.
1. We build through the midfield in which the Matuidi signing is fine but another CM would be needed of the characteristics you described.

2. We build through the wings/attack- with nearly 100M spent on Bernardeschi and Costa, I think it's clear we went with this route. Our best 11 probably only has two CMs, one being Pjanic, the other has to be someone that can cover the space and get us the ball.

Well your board clearly learned their lesson and know what they're doing, because last time you went on a spending spree, top 5 biggest net spenders in the whole world or whatever it was, you ended up relegated.
