I also feel Kubrick's films are overrated a bit because he was a visionary who made films completely different to his contemporaries. But just because something is different in scope and vision, doesn't mean it is necessarily always good and enjoyable.

It's nice to watch 2001 and The Shining, but i never felt an urge to go back and watch them again, or even consider either of them to be one of my favourites in their respective genres.

I love Eyes Wide Shut, that's easily my favourite Kubrick film, and then i really enjoyed A Clockwork Orange's unhinged mood.

Well you could skip the directional debut. Although I've seen all Kubricks I don't remember Fear and Desire, with 60 minutes it's hardly full feature. Rewatchability doesn't really mean how good movie is, there's a lot of movies I consider one of the best, but would never watch them again.

Eyes Wide Shut is my favorite Kubrick too, after Paths of Glory and Barry Lyndon. Depending the mood really.

Paths Of Glory is a fantastic war movie. Most overlooked Kubrick film imo.

It is. Being slow paced b&w non action antiwar movie, it's pretty hard sell nowadays. But once you start watching it, it really enthralls you. Kirk Douglas acting was superb.

Moon is easily my most fav space film. Space Odyssey was epic. But Moon was emotional and resonated with me far more. Sam Rockwell’s performance haunted me. Such a brilliant cinema. And everything Nolan tried to do with Interstellar, Duncan Jones did it 5 years earlier on a much lesser budget with Moon. I meant the core of both the movies were same, even if the subject matters were different. Not undermining the former, just saying Moon deserved far more viewing and attention than it got, really.

Arrival was frking brilliant as well.

Weird, I find Kubrick's films extremely rewatchable. Particularly 2001 and A Clockwork Orange, which are my favorites.

Baffled that El Gunner who is that passionate on films finds Kubrick films overrated.

I do notice you tend to like mostly modern films to which the pacing may suit some viewers as if anything my taste has shifted from classics to modern films though might be due to my shortened attention span and value of time.

Kubrick films are the most re-watchable given their attention to detail.

The second viewing of his films are usually the best compared to the first. What a visionary.

a matter of taste i suppose, but your observation is spot on. Might be a short attention span thing for me as well tbh, i mean look at how technology has shortened all our attention spans, it's a thing indeed.

But for me it has always been like this as i feel more connected to modern film because i feel i unconsciously place more value on them in that they are of my time, and the filmmakers are usually still alive and they speak on modern day culture and phenomena and use modern techniques of film style and film language.

of course not to say that past films don't have symbolism that can't be applied to today's culture, but yea i feel like it's not a bad thing to apply myself to contemporary art. I feel the exact same way about music in terms of music artists that i follow closely

Both Leone's trilogies, No Name and Once Upon should be required viewing for anyone interested in cinema. He's one of the few if not the only director given carte blanche from producers to make a movie. I read that he got 100M budget for the Stalingrad movie, and this was early as 1989. Of course he died before he could start on it, from heart failure after realizing what they had done to his OUatIA. I would say Once Upon a Time in the West is the only perfect movie ever created. Everything about it is perfect, audio perfect, music perfect, script perfect, visuals perfect, direction perfect, camera work, actors perfect. Even every line of dialogue is thoughtful and not a filler. The whole movie could be sliced to epic scenes like this:

There is NO WAY I could take Sam Rockwell seriously in a lead role after Green Mile. Really makes it impossible for me to watch Moon.

Some actors are so ingrained with a specific role in your brain, even in the trailer I was half expecting Sam Rockwell to start drooling like a maniac and singing: "Barbecue, me and you! Stinky pinky, pew, pew! Or dilly, Jilly, Hilly or Bob! It was a french-fried Cajun named Delacroix!"

Yea lol. Thing is its so different. I mean his every role is different. Green Mile, Three billboards, Moon. Such a fine, fine actor. Can't believe he is so underrated. But then again, he won an Oscar for Billboards, so yea may be, finally people are starting to see his talent.

Just watched Parasite, bizarre AF

dunno if parts of it went over my head with some kind of meta social commentary

but it was oddly captivating

the only social commentary was class differences and the perpetual cycle of it, but what i disliked about it is the director doesn't give any profound message or at least a strong stance on what he thinks of it at the end.
