Now that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back to his beloved AC Milan, we take a look at the Top 5 veteran legends who returned home.
All football clubs have veteran legends who wish they returned home after leaving, we have the Top 5 comebacks in recent history.
We are talking about the footballers who became one of their beloved clubs’ biggest legends and got their wish to return.
Not all of these cases are success stories, but they all got to fulfill their wishes.
Most of the players we will mention were wildly successful at their club, but some of them didn’t win much until their second spell.
We give you, the Top 5 veteran legends who returned to their beloved clubs.
5.- Thierry Henry – Arsenal
Out of the five players we are mentioning here, Thierry Henry is the least successful of the bunch.
He became one of the best players in Premier League history at Arsenal, he was part of the ‘Invincibles’.
But he decided to leave in order to find success in the Champions League.
After returning, he came back as a veteran and even managed to score a goal in the domestic cup against Leeds United.
The Frenchman didn’t win any titles or anything like that, but he at least fulfilled his wish.
4.- Zlatan Ibrahimovic – AC Milan
The most recent return just happened this week. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is feeling at home on his return to AC Milan.
The Swedish striker won his most recent Serie A title with the Rossoneri and he scored many amazing goals.
We are still eager to see what he does in Milano at the age of 38.
The competition in Serie A is very stiff right now, which means Zlatan will have fun with such a daunting task ahead of him.
We are curious to know if you think he has any chance of success during his second spell at AC Milan.
3.- Didier Drogba – Chelsea FC
The Ivorian legend became one of Chelsea’s most revered players ever, he won the Champions League as a Blue.
He decided to return as a veteran after a period in China and Turkey.
Although he didn’t get to play that much, Drogba was an important part of Jose Mourinho’s Premier League return.
Didier got to say goodbye to his beloved Chelsea with an important title before going on his retirement trip to the MLS.
2.- Fernando Torres – Atletico Madrid
Fernando Torres’ story with his beloved Atletico Madrid is backward.
The man was pushed to leave his childhood club due to the institution’s economic problems.
He went on to build an incredible career in English football and eventually returned.
When he came back to the Colchoneros, Torres won the UEFA Europa League before retiring.
Getting to bid farewell to his childhood club in this fashion was unthinkable for Torres. He made it in life.
1.- Juan Roman Riquelme – Boca Juniors
Juan Roman Riquelme is even greater than Diego Maradona to all Boca Juniors fans.
This man is the reason the Bosteros won so many Copa Libertadores at the end of the last millennium.
But more importantly, Riquelme decided to return after his European adventure and kept winning trophies.
Although he didn’t retire at Boca, Roman won another Copa Libertadores and led his squad to glory one more time.
The fans love Riquelme so much, that they are willing to keep him as a board member in recent times.
We even think he could become the club’s president someday.

Swear I did not look at the list but if I do I am positive that Riquelme is 1st on the list as was this thread made solely to highlight that.

I have so many questions about this list
Why is Henry only at 5? Why is Torres above Drogba? Where is older players like Rush or Le Saux?

I feel Paul Scholes
should be no.2.
Retired on 2011,
comeback on 2012 with a bang
(won the league).

for me guest_07 is the biggest veteran legend

Me too
and it starts with - why is AC Milan Ibrahimovic's home? Last I checked he played for Malmö. Ajax, Juve and Inter before even his first Milan stint?
Also, Lothar Matthäus is the no. 1.

Re: Top veteran legends who returned to their beloved clubs
Shouldn’t the question be “why is Riquelme considered a legend?”

I’ll euphorically dub that campaign Naymar 2020 if he ends up turning you down, for whatever reason.

Re: Top veteran legends who returned to their beloved clubs
There are many great Boca players who came back when they were old. Maradona, Palermo, Gago, Tevez and of course Riquelme.

If Lothar Matthaus can be a high rank in Bayern,
than he can compete for the no.1.

tbf, Bayern wasn't Lothars 'home' club either. He had his breakthrough at Gladbach.

And was absolutely fantastic for us in that short return stint, in my opinion.
