This was one of the most baffling things about Juventus' formation . More of a general question so I didn't want to discuss it just with respect to today's match. The likes of asamoah licht, peluso outwide are competent defensively(excellent in licht's case) but your attacking output from the flanks is very low. Can a team that is not barca afford to ignore the flanks to that extent? Also it means each of your wide men will get doubled up on defensively, on top of having to generate an attacking threat. Bayern have four genuine world class wide men, Put 2 each on peluso and licht and there was only going to be one result. You might get away with it in serie A where's there's not too many class wide men these days, but to pull it off at the top most level you'll need players who are incredible offensively and defensively as they'd be doing a double shift. Players like nedved, lahm or prime maicon. Even then it seems like a it'd aways be at a disadvantage against a team that has both wc fullbacks and wingers/wide forwards, because of what you give up on the flanks. Thoughts?

I think you have a point. Peluso having to deal with Lahm-Robben was laughable. However 3-5-2 would have been fine if we actually tried to play our own game instead of allowing a team with as you said 4 top wide men to advance on us time after time.

I think in the 2nd half we should have went to 4-3-3.

Tactically Conte got his ass handed to him. Our key man is Pirlo and we keep employing a tactic which makes Pirlo nearly usleless. If we want to go for 3-5-2 we need to take the game to any top opponent. If not, we should have played 4-3-3.

Peluso in general is not good enough so i'm not shocked he failed. Licht had too much to do even for him.

It was very simple, Conte merely did not prepare for this game as much as he should have. He has been criticized for a somewhat lackadaisical approach in essentially deploying this re-formed 5-3-2 in order to preserve defensive integrity, but sacrificing attacking prowess and the essence of MVP. It works v smaller teams with less quality yet it has proven to fail v Lazio, Napoli, Nordsjaelland, Shaktar's match in Juventus Arena and only worked v Provincial mid-table Serie A sides and of course, Celtic.

He uses it quite infrequently but when he does, it sacrifices all that is the crux of his original system into something that is very frustrating for his players, especially the midfield. It nullifies Pirlo's role to where he is rendered ineffective, it causes Marchisio to focus on roles to which he is uncomfortable in performing. It compels the natural wingbacks to be subdued in counter-pressing and act as defensive-natured fullbacks, which also takes a respective hit on the integrity of the 3 man back-line especially Barzagli and Cheillini. It also doesn't help when he doesn't field Vucinic who is the fulcrum of the attacking front for Juve in such a system. Pressing is also strangely sacrificed.

It is the main point of criticism in Conte's brilliant career and mind to which he needs to overcome in order to be a true beacon of tactical innovation to which many say he is.

It was the complete antithesis of how you should play v Bayern as which is why I am confident Juventus could have been tenfold better v them if they actually stuck to what works best, something Conte is blind to see at times.

He didn't do his homework like Jupp and showed some inexperience by some naive choices which were brave, but resulted in a catastrophe to which Bayern took well advantage of.
