No Kompany was NOT top 3 last year. I kept saying last year how he was overrated on here and quite frankly by the media.

And I can agree that Varane is arguably top 10 atm but saying he's top 5 is just outrageous.

I can even dig up Baresi and Nesta videos where other attackers executed against them and they gave up a goal. It happens... just not often at all. That's the sign of greatness: If people have to execute great technical plays to beat you and they don't do it often. So far this year, that's exactly how you describe Varane.

you cant just blame varane for everything,
gala was bombardising madrid, everything was out of control once eboue scored that beauty, given that varane was 1 on 1 against TOP class experienced players and luck played its part i dont think we should make a big deal out of this

Defending him for those two goals are a bit of a stretch. He has been excellent this year yet its rather forgiving to not see the obvious mistakes in the goals to which he paid for. He is quite young and will surely learn yet there is little reason to defend him from the complacency in the 2nd half to which is unforgivable within a club like RM. It wasn't as bad as made out to be yet some basic 101s were broken here.

Nesta is judged on his whole career on the other hand we are judging varane on a handful of games

A lot of people changed their minds about Messi during the last world cup because of his 0 goals stat, not really how he played.

as I've said before varanes a really impressive player and has loads of potential, easily one of the best youngCB around, but I dont think he is elite just yet

hard to name a defender around today that would be world class some years ago.

Cant stop Drogba and Sneijder, but according to GL he does stop Messi in a 1v1. Bow to GL!

Sorry but no. Anyone who followed Nesta when he became a regular at Lazio at the age of 19 immediately said he was one of the best defenders out there regardless of age. They didn't wait to give him accolades. If you look at the 2 goals he let past in the Euro 2000 final, he was in great position in both. The ball just lobbed him on the first and Pires managed a nutmeg pass despite Nesta making a fantastic sliding tackle attempt in front of him.... it just happens in footy. They weren't mistakes.

Performance on the pitch is the judge. Nothing else. There's a big difference between a mistake and a great play from an attacker.

Losing a 35 year old man who is struggling to reach pace beyond your given zone. Combine Pepe's inability to read diagonal runs, it makes for a rather poor judgement of defence by both individuals.

lol. Varane was in perfect position on Drogba's goal. You're supposed to stay in front of the CF while maintaining close contact when he makes a near post run, which is what he did. He was all over him. Drogba managed to execute a fantastic backheel because that's the only shot he could get off.

I agree with you there, like yesterday (call me biased) Agueros goal was one of those great plays, however, I don't think it's as big a difference as you think, all it takes is a momentary lapse in concentration and the players already past you and shooting on goal, I believe that's what happened today and Varane was caught flat footed. I've stated my opinion on his performances and the player himself, you can take it or leave it, however i get the notion you will leave it

Collblanc is doing exactly what you docked me for on this thread... he should get the same penalty Dani or any other mod.
