The reason he went Zenit, probably the same as Bruno Alves, Hulk and others before him. Huge pay increase.

But yes I agree he shouldnt be playing there and deserves better. But its his own fault for moving for money aswell as accepting a buy out clause so high. He was a very good young player, but he was coming from Standard Liege. Hardly the highest pedigree.

I remember at the time, people were not sure he was going to be great, they hoped so. 40m at the time sounded very steep...still does but today its more reasonable when you see the price of other midfielders.

I am assuming Gil is basing his opinion on Belgium games I suppose he is watching.

He only played about 30 games for Benfica, about a third of which I bothered watching. So I wont comment too much on his ability.

I think he is a pretty good player though, albeit a little dirty.

He's only been in Russia for a year.

He's been flawless for Belgium, had a terrific Champions League campaign for Belgium and has been highly rated for years.

Unreal physically and technically. Versatile and tactically disciplined enough to convert himself from a B2B midfielder into a controller ala Busquets. Has a bit of a nasty streak but all great defenders have that trait.

From what (little) I've seen from him, he does look quite good. But the price range he's been put into with the mega money buy means you'd have to be insane to buy him. Because for that 40M type range you could buy a real gamechanger.

I will say this. If you could pay 40m and get Witsel, I would rather that than 28 year old Fernandinho at the same price or Illarramendi at like a million less who is less than a year younger with much less experience.

None of these players are worth these amounts I do stress but still.

Doumbia last I heard was struggling with injuries.
