I watched the game only superficially, but does anyone really think Özil for example was more at fault for Arsenal's Monaco loss than most other players?

And I do think he offers a lot to Arsenal, but he's become the favourite scapegoat of English pundits because of their obsession with body language.
For example, I honestly think that 50% more expensive di Maria so far has performed infinitely - and I do mean infinitely - worse for Utd than Özil has for Arsenal even in his weak spells, but you won't see commentators picking on him because he runs and dribbles around hysterically, even if one in three of his passes, corners or freekicks goes hilariously astray hmm

It means if you multiply Ozils transfer fee by 1.5 you get Di Maria's transfer fee.

Mesut Ozil’s languid style has drawn criticism from supporters and pundits, but since his return from injury, no Arsenal player has eaten up as many yards as the German midfielder.
Looking at Premier League stats since and including the 5-0 home win against Aston Villa on February 1, Ozil has led the way for his side in terms of distance covered.
Ozil also ran more than any Arsenal player in the 3-1 Champions League defeat by Monaco, clocking up 11.38 kilometres.
Against Everton on Sunday, Ozil was Arsenal’s leading runner, and his heat map shows how he floated around the pitch, occupying a central position but also drifting onto either flank.
It was the same story against Leicester last month when Ozil was above Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky as Arsenal’s hardest worker.
In the league as a whole since his return to the fold, Ozil is ranked 23rd for distance covered.[..]  And yet in spite of the playmaker’s evident industry, why does he still get described as lazy and uninterested?

A big reason for the label is the way Ozil moves – he’s very measured in possession, and less frenetic than someone like Alexis Sanchez.
In addition, Ozil does much of his running off the ball which naturally gets unnoticed but is important to the way Arsenal’s fluid front five operates.
Of course distance covered is not the only metric that should be used to measure a player’s industry, but then neither is a player’s body language – the unquantifiable stick that is so often used to beat Ozil.

ozil runs around like a mad man when arsenal are playing well and winning. but when things are not going great he wont dig in a work hard. he just hides and goes missing. you will never see arsenal lose and ozil get MOTM or even 7 out of 10 in the same game.

but what way did he run. did he dig in and work hard for the team. or did he just make forward runs and give up when he didn't get the ball. its not just about how far you run. its about how hard you work for the team. from what ive seen from ozil is this. the lad has bags of talent. but he only shows up when things are going good. when arsenal are under pressure he lets people run off him. and he gets bullyed out the game. ok. I know he is a forward thinking player. but there is no excuse for not working. coutinho is a forward thinking player. but he still works his nuts off.

Or, if he shows up, the impact is so big, the team does well in return?

We know three things about Özil:
1) he makes smart runs
2) his off the ball movement is excellent
3) he runs a lot

Those three together really make it hard to make a case for lack of effectiveness, or effort.

And what kind of laziness is it when you do super-much just not "the right kind of a lot"?

last season when arsenal got raped in the big games he was the worst player on the pitch. I remember the game v Liverpool. Henderson destroyed him. with ease I might add. now lets be honest. he has more talent the Henderson. but the power. work rate and fight from Henderson ironed him out.

Yeah but you have to take physical ability into account also, and the fact that Henderson is a lot more talented than people give him credit for. Work rate is not just about wanting to work as hard as you can all the time, but actually having the physical ability to do so. I honestly don't know many people that are tireless and have the recovery speed of Henderson. Maybe he's great at energy management but he always seems to be moving.

Post by VivaStPauli Fri Mar 06, 2015 2:26 pm

If Arsenal's shitty form results in nobody making the runs to free themselves properly enough to receive a pass, a passing machine like Özil will look shitty.

Just like that big, oak-like man-giant Mertesacker looks like shit every time Arsenal's high line gets sprung. Becasue he's slow. Nobody is denying that and it shouldn't factor into the question of whether he's good at what he does.

Özil lacks phyiscal strength and isn't exactly a tackle monster, also his shot power is lacking. That still leaves an assist-machine playmaker that runs a lot and is everywhere, always ready to receive a pass. Not his fault his team isn't clicking, imho.

Just like I doubt the revisionist Madrisdas claiming he was lazy when he was there. I watched a lot of matches, and he just wasn't. Especially coming from a team that is perfectly capable of glossing over the fact Ramos and Pepe are blatantly using their celebrity to not get constantly red-carded and indulging Ronaldo who was the embodiment of laziness for 3 seasons.

Though I'm sure it feels better to have sold Özil if you choose to believe that. Just like Hans tries very hard to convince himself that Kroos didn't make Bayern a whole lot better.

Ozil was averaging ~10km/game for us. The lazy bias was happening because he was sweating after 30 mins but he was running a lot.

I also know he looks lazy, I mean the way he moves... Because he's pretty tall and thin, he just looks like he's coasting along, taking small steps... But that's just the way he moves.
Players like Beckenbauer looked the same when dribbling, if you like the player it's "effortless grace", if you think he's a POS, it's "lazy", and "not even trying to run".

When you have fat midgets like Götze, Messi, or the like in comparison, with their short legs, they always seem to be scurrying around, like mice on speed. Even though players like Maradona or Gerd Müller were amazingly lazy in some of their matches. Just looks like you're making an effort if you start to sprint with shorter legs.

That's why you have his managers, Loew, Mourinho and Wenger, constantly defending him from the criticism that stems from his body language.

They know the player, he wouldn't have been/be a starter under them if he were 'lazy'.
