Pretty much everything that Sánchez does shows up in the numbers. He’s in the top 10 in the league in goals, shots on target, attempted take-ons, and successful take-ons per 90 minutes of players with over 1,000 minutes.1 He’s 12th in shots per 90, 13th in fouls suffered per 90, and 11th in chances created. This makes sense. Most stats measure on-ball action, and during a game, our eyes naturally settle on the ball. It’s nice and intuitive. You see Sánchez do good stuff, and that stuff shows up on all the pretty heat maps and shot charts.

How has this become a universal stat to show how good someone is? Laughing

Possibly shows that the playerr has "dat" factor about him. That he likes to be on the ball a lot to make things happen and that defenders consider him a danger therefore taking him out O.o o.O Laughing

or that he is just a fantastic dribbler so much so that defenders always mistime their challenges.

Not necessarily my personal opinion on whether it should stand in consideration to whether someone is good, but I just believe that the above would be the thought process of the person who wrote that. hmm

It doesn't tell you all that much, but if you are one of the most-fouled players over the course of an entire season, you probably tend to go 1on1 a lot and have the defenders attention.

Could also mean you dive a lot, though.

I don't know what match you were watching but he always created our counter attacking opportunities and always relieved pressure whenever he had the ball

Yes, that's what I'm saying. His movements mean he's always there to receive the ball, making Arsenal's counter-attacks possible, while his closing down of space, and forcing his teammates to play smarter than they are with his passes puts pressure on the opposition.

Today was one of those matches, where, if you paid attention, you could see a 50 million transfer pay off.

not allways. but what I do find when talking about a mf player. his performences when you lose tells you a lot about him. for instance carrick has never won MOTM what man u have lost a game. so that tells me that carrick only playes well when the team play well. and not the other way around. yet somone like gerrard has been the best player on the pitch plenty of times when Liverpool have lost. I think ozil is more like carrick than gerrard. cheers

Disagree. There should be instances where Özil was among the better performers on the pitch, yet Arsenal (or Madrid, or Bremen, or Schalke) ended up losing.

One player performing excellently can easily be negated by brainfarts at the back.

I think Özil is a class apart from both Carrick and Gerrard, each of whom is a legend in their own right. That said, Özil just turned 27 and arguably entering his prime now. What he accomplishes in the next 3-5 years would be a gauge of what his true ceiling is.

He's been the best attacking midfielder in the PL since he came back from injury.

This isn't new tbh, can he be inconsistent? sure but name me a player in his position in the history of football that isn't? it comes with the territory and more often than not he usually is responsible for creating most of Arsenal's chances.

He's a fantastic player and it's quite sad how much he's disrespected considering how great he is to watch and amazingly talented he is.... i was told growing up that football is about entertainment, yet i see utter scrubs with no ability what so ever getting 10x the respect.
