The Utility Man - Nacho Fernandez

Nacho is a homegrown player who perfectly embodies the values of Real Madrid. He has been at the club for over a decade having arrived in 2001 as a youth team player. He has gradually risen through the ranks to the first team. Just one month after winning the UEFA Under-21 Championship, he also earned his first full cap in Geneva (Switzerland) against Chile.
One of the most important dates in his career was the 23rd of April 2011 when he made his debut for Real Madrid away against Valencia. Nacho started the game which Madrid won 6-3.
Although his natural position is at centre back, he is a versatile player. He plays intelligently in any defensive position and stands out for his speed, calmness, strong tackling and, above all, his great maturity on the pitch in spite of his youth.

I was actually quite impressed with him yesterday. That shot that bounced off the post was incredible and several time his reception of a high pass was excellent.
However he like all the defense had some issues yesterday. That first goal he was totally surprised at Immobile behind him???
But the alternative was Arbeloa and if that had happened weak weak Danilo on one side and Arbeloa on the other!!! They would have had 6 goals!!!

I totally agree with you. I think in the second half along with the rest of the defence he was poor but in the first half he completely nullified both Vitolo and Konoplyanka. Glad that he got called up for Spain

It's hard for a defense to hold shape when both fullback areas are getting absolutely raped.... you're always forced to compensate and space opens up.
Just so happened that the opponent's strength was on Danilo's side this time. Nacho/Marcelo's side has usually been the one to get attacked.... and if Sevilla still had Navas, it would have.
Solid lad. More of a CB than a fullback because of pace.

Oh he's a solid utility man. 4th in line for CB and the utility lateral (he actually can play both sides). I think Arbeloa is done, he hasn't been given a sniff since that horrendous play against Atleti and I think they will try to sign a legitimate LB in January so in essence besides being 4th CB, he is the 3rd lateral on either side.
What was the surprise to me was his ball skills both with the shot (and the goal against PSG) but also his ball reception on those high passes.
I don't think he will ever be a starter, but bench guys with this flexibility and attitude is exactly what we need in reserves.

@futbol_bill, whilst i like nacho and agree with all you've said, i think i recall him saying the goal against psg was a bit fluke-ish

Yes it was, he had intended a pass (with wrong foot), but what was amazing was that he got his foot on it in the first place.

I have to say, I've given Nacho a lot of crap over the years but he has been fantastic. Definitely a late bloomer, but we are lucky to have him- covering LB, RB, and CB like a pro.
I'll admit, especially with our defense under performing this season so far he has been one of our best defenders if not the best and most consistent.
His player thread is seriously lacking.

Yeah, I totally did not think anything of him. Even went so far as to think he was a late addition to the famous Zidanes y Pavones policy. But it turns out, I was wrong and the man could actually play football. Surprisingly adept with both feet, actually tries to play a more balance role at full back (compared to Marcelo and I guess Dani these days), competent as a CB and puts in an honest shift bar the rough up he would get now and then by superior footballers.

Forgot about this thread. Someone mentioned earlier that he didn't have pace to play lateral!
Did you know that Nacho is the fastest player on team!!!
Hala reported it last year after some training times. I didn't believe it at that time thinking it was some fluke timing, but I checked it out and have witnessed his speed several times in past month. He is deceptively fast.

He definitely is deceptively fast, but the speed trials I think hala was citing, was unfortunately not taken entirely seriously by everyone from what I have heard.

Yeah dude.. Nacho is ridiculously fast. His problem was more reflexes/bad positioning. He's fixed that and I've never seen him beat for pace so far.

I firmly believe that Varane is easily the fastest in the squad. He's the only player i've seen to outrun Obamayang.

To answer your question however, most were expecting for Nacho to be sold after a very disappointing season and because we have purchased Militao. Nacho extending means its clear Zidane still trusts him and Vallejo is very likely to be sold now.
