Re: Donald Trump watch
50 % still voted for a child molester on a horse who thinks 9/11 was a biblical punishment, women shouldn't vote and slavery was great. This country.

Re: Donald Trump watch
They also voted in Trump who has sexual allegations, called Mexicans rapists, bragged about assaulting women etc by 33% vote margin (I think).
I do think it's disgusting it was that close, but I'm both surprised and happy that Alabama managed to not elect a Republican over a Dem.

Considering Trump won by something like a 30 point margin just 1 year ago I'd say it's pretty impressive so many changed their mind so quickly, tbffutbol wrote:50 % still voted for a child molester on a horse who thinks 9/11 was a biblical punishment, women shouldn't vote and slavery was great. Re: Donald Trump watch
Black women saved the country from Moore honestly. 97% voted for Jones with black men voting 93%. That is an amazing turnout for a special election.
White turnout was low, as expected, and the whites who did turnout, especially women, voted heavily for Moore. No surprise there.
That white women voted in such numbers (52% college-educated, 73% no college) for this guy, despite those allegations, is truly horrible.

Its disappointing black women went to bat for this guy despite the fact that he pandered to neo-conservatives this election with ads like this:
Could you imagine Jewish women coming out in record numbers for a guy who could honor a nazi general during a commercial. Both sides BS.
That general was a traitor and a murderer, who put his life on the line to defend the right of Alabamans to own black people. He should be in the dustbin of history, not as an example of honor for a democratic candidate in the 21st century.
I would have voted for him if I had to, but that speaks more about Moore than it does him. We can mention him sending KKK guys to jail, and it is admirable, but that commercial and rhetoric is unacceptable.

Re: Donald Trump watch
For sure, Doug Jones, as a Southerner, has to be taken with a grain of salt as there's always this need to pander to conservatives and neo-conservatives if you're a white democrat running against the GOP down there. Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Al Gore know all about that.
That said, he's the lesser of 2 evils. This was a no brainer honestly.
Even then - I doubt he remains in the Senate for longer than the next couple of years. Their GOP is still very much the institution there so as long as the next candidate they run isn't a child molester or serial sexual harasser, they'll beat Jones handily and turn that seat red again. It'll be as if this election never happened I imagine.

Re: Donald Trump watch
It's the power of religion. I'll see if I can find the stat tomorrow, but I think White women who weren't evangelical actually didn't go for Moore in high numbers. It was that white, evalengelical women decided to turn out and vote in high numbers for Moore.
As crazy as it sounds, people can rationalize paedophilia vs baby killing and paedophilia is not quite as bad in their heads. Besides, he's a god fearing, repenting, religious man.

The guy is representing Alabama, of course he has to say and/or believe that crap. An ugly side of the US. Flyover state.

Re: Donald Trump watch
The guy has a long career of standing up for civil rights of the black community as an attorney, it's why they came out in droves for him. He sent KKK members to jail decades after they did the crime.
But hey, he ran that ad, so that negates that, right?

It shows a fundamental lack of respect for black people no matter his actions.
Would he have did that to show the contrast between a Nazi and American general during ww2? Would jewish people accept that?
For black people to be such a large segment of the Alabama population, people sure expect them to put up with stuff. That ad is flat out disrespectful.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Is 'Seriously Considering' Running for President
"If [Johnson] were to put himself in that position, he would get my support wholeheartedly," Kevin Hart said about 'Jumanji' co-star and former wrestler.

I'm reminded of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where the president is always an actor with no real power but whose job it is to always be the center of attention.
Seems kinda prescient now.

That's a good point, although he went for governor first IIRC, not straight for media to president.

Re: Donald Trump watch
Yeah, it seems so bizzare to me that this is actually very likely to happen. In my country it's basically unimaginable that a nonpolitican becomes president. Trump was a surprise already, but The Rock... I can already visualize the banter. The meme industry is gonna appreciate that, surely. Elon Musk should also run, lmao.

Yeah he was governor of California, like Arnie, I think he quit his Hollywood acting career for politics in the 50s/early 60s maybe

Tax cut passed the Senate last night. Going to the house now where it will surely pass.

It further increases the difference between the top 1% and the rest and createst more inequality.
Inequality hurts a country's overall economy because the top 1% isn't the people who spend money. They're the people who save money to get richer.
The middleclass are the ones who buy stuff and keeps the economy going and by creating more inequality you're hurting the whole country.
The whole concept of tax breaks are to give people more money to spend, but they're only giving the rich these breaks.
Their excuse is tricle down economics, which is all but a myth.

Yes, it makes sense. However, it can be argued that rich people worked to get their money as hard as anyone else is, so why should they be taxed more?

Re: Donald Trump watch
The answer to that question is just a matter of how you view your ideal society. Some people will argue for what you said and that's valid. Others will argue for equality and that's valid too.
I myself am for a bit more equality, so I'm pro higher taxes and tax brackets. In South America we have crazy income inequality and the poverty that comes with it creates problems for everyone, rich or poor. It breeds crime and antagonistic relations in society between classes. In the US it's the same to a lesser degree.
In belgium where I live now it's very hard to get rich as taxes are the highest in Europe and social systems are extensive. I take that though because it means that everyone lives reasonably well. It means that hospitals are free, that schools are free (for when I eventually have kids), that I can walk almost everyone everywhere and feel safe and most neighbourhoods are reasonably nice. Things like that.
Young people in this system have a real fighting chance to be whatever they want if they study/work hard enough as the social platform gives you certainties. If you are born poor in the US you are almost surely screwed.
