Can a retired player win the Balon dor?
Let's say you finish off an amazing season, where you are without a doubt the best player in the world, lead your club to every trophy possible (ei. at usually the Treble, including the UCL title) and retire by the end of the season.
Kinda awkward to claim the Balon dor 6 months later, no? when you are retired.
has this ever happened?

Zidane finished 2nd in 2006. Although I think Balon D Or was seasonal back then rather than calendar year (as it should be)

ofcourse it can happen, if such a player is a media darling then then it can very well happen. also if the season starts and nobody really stands out the media will look for a way to justify any decision. thats the thing about the balon d'or, its subjective, not like a top goalscorer prize, so rules can always change (and there has never been a set rule or criteria for the award), its pretty much anything goes
