That would be funny, but they're playing West Ham at home and no team apart from Newcastle themselves have picked up less points from their last 10 games than the Hammers, who have completely switched off a long time ago. Plus if Hull couldn't beat Burnley at home in a must-win game, I don't know how they're going to beat Man United.

Stranger things have happened though.

I see myself agreeing with Moal that in the long term, it might even be good for NUFC to go down this season. hmm

For that Hull would have to do something right for once, which I cannot see. Although I do hope so.

I think upper management is/was always a bigger problem than Pardiola and his limitations. They should have had consistent top 7 finish for 3-4 seasons (after that 5th finish) and try to push on from there. I think all is going wrong for them now. Sacking him did no good to them eventually.

Post by Art Morte Sat May 23, 2015 10:20 am

The final round is tomorrow. Not awfully lot to play for, really, and it kind of reflects it how the whole season has fizzled out in the second half of the season. In the first half we had West Ham and Southampton fighting even for a top-4 finish, Man City were at least somewhat keeping up with Chelsea in the title race and there was quite a lot of movement in all parts of the table. The best stories in the 2nd half have been Pardew at Palace, Newcastle's collapse and Leicester's great escape. A little underwhelming.

Anyway, I'm getting that mixture of relief and sadness that the season's about to end. Let's see what the final round has in store for us.

Arsenal v West Brom
Arsene Wenger said in his presser something like that the "feeling is really good" about a big title challenge next season. They've been good in the 2nd half of the season, so maybe they can mount such a challenge. Tony Pulis quietly did his thing again, took over mid-season at the Baggies and guided them easily to safety. What has he got to do to get a chance at a big club?

Aston Villa v Burnley
Survival just about secured before the final round for Villa and an FA cup final waiting, on the balance of things it turned out to be a pretty good season for them. Burnley are going down, but if they invest their Premiership cash successfully, who knows how soon we might see them again?

Chelsea v Sunderland
Chelsea have been champions for a while now, but for Sunderland fans this is probably the first match in ages they can be relaxed about.

Crystal Palace v Swansea
Two teams and managers who can be all smiles on the final day.

Everton v Tottenham
Two teams and managers who are probably a little bit disappointed with their seasons.

Hull City v Manchester United
One of the two actually very important final day games. Hull must win and hope Newcastle don't win in order to stay in the league.

Leicester v QPR
Twenty points from their last ten games mean that Leicester - who were bottom of the table for months - wrote one of the biggest stories of the season.

Manchester City v Southampton
City have secured 2nd place, Southampton are hoping to overtake either or both of Tottenham and Liverpool to secure a Europa League spot.

Newcastle v West Ham
It's ridiculous how bad Newcastle have been. Ridiculous. The good news for them is that West Ham, too, have been poor for months. No team apart from their hosts have picked up less points than the Hammers from their last 10 games. That should give the Toon some hope that they can finally win a game here and secure survival regardless of the outcome in the Hull v ManU game.

Stoke v Liverpool
It's been a very good season for Stoke, who will finish 9th. Although sometimes I wonder can you have too "safe" a season? What do you think, Mole? Stoke were never really competing for European places and never in danger of being dragged into the relegation battle. In a way they've had very little to play for this season. As for us, what's at stake here is that do we enter Europa League in the group stage or in the qualifying rounds. I wonder how I'm going to sleep tonight.

LvG said something like " We have taken 6 points from Newcastle therefore should take 6 from Hull too." Laughing

implying he will try to help newc avoid drop. Proud Nobody asked anything about that specifically and he still came up with it.

Newcastle are lucky Hull are facing United. Even with us on holiday mode, we should still have enough in the reserves to take points off them.

Hull will get relegated tomorrow.

I don't get Newcastle tho. I mean everytime we play them @Newcastle they just spank our ass, so you'd think they are one of these teams, like Athletic Bilbao, that are so good at home and can beat everyone and secure themselves a safe spot in the table through the 19 games at home, and instead this is the second year in three when they are so close to relegation that they would have been relegated without the win against Chelsea.

How can they be so consistent about both beating us and getting close to relegation?

Teams for the two big games remaining, then...

Newcastle:
Krul; Janmaat, Coloccini, Williamson, Dummett; Anita, Sissoko, Colback; Riviere, Guitierrez, Cisse

West Ham:
Adrian; Jenkinson, Burke, Reid, Cresswell; Song, Nolan, Kouyate, Downing; Valencia, Cole

Hull:
Harper; Dawson, Chester, McShane; Elmohammady, Meyer, Huddlestone, Quinn, Brady; N'Doye, Jelavic

Man Utd:
Valdes; Valencia, Smalling, Jones, Rojo; Blind, Herrera, Di Maria; Mata, Young, Rooney

Quite simply, Hull need to win and hope that Newcastle don't win in order to stay up. Newcastle's poor goal difference means that a draw would not be good enough to keep them up were Hull to beat Man Utd.

Else where, Liverpool and Spurs currently occupy the two automatic EL spots in the league. Southampton are the only team who can challenge for those two spots, though depending on the FA Cup result, 7th will also be an EL spot so it may not even matter.

Man Utd can get third if they win, Arsenal lose and there's a seven goal swing.
