As I said before, one is responsible for signing a fraudulent tax statement regardless if the accountant (his father) is the culprit. I doubt however, if Messi will get jail time, rather a fine, but his father will not be as fortunate.

What Harmonica does not understand is the difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion.

Leo's father was supposed to be present at the court since the prosecutioner already cleared Leo's name. But State attorney has asked for trial and judge approved it. Judge also rejected the request of prosecutors to drop the charges against Leo. State Attorney is Marta Silva. Former Real Madrid Director and also close associate of Florentino Perez.

In the US, tax fraud of over a certain amount has MANDATORY jail time without the possibility of parole. Given the amounts here, he would have spent time in prison no question. Doesn't matter who you are.

Well, as you see in Germany, Uli Hoeneß wasn't saved by his name either. He's still serving his jail sentence for tax evasion (he got 3 1/2 years, although he will likely be released after 2 years and 4 months if he behaves properly).

Absolutely hate rich people who avoid taxes. Like you need that extra 5 million you got, let alone from playing football. gtfo you selfish pleb. Meanwhile, honest hard working average citizens of the first world have to usually pay a ~30%+ tax rate and submit their taxes on time to the irs/whatever agency you may please. otherwise its jailtime.

That's very untrue. Infact, in the US it's very easy to reach setlements not involving jail, especially if you are rich and can pay many times the amount evaded.

Partially true free cat.  On tax fraud and and bank fraud specifically, sentences are based on a chart...  It's based on the monetary amount of the fraud.  Nothing the judge or lawyers can do.  The sentences are predetermined although not mandated...  Meaning there is some very minor wiggle room.  This was done back in the 80s because the sentences were all over the place.

Most prosecutors will ask you to pay back as much of the fraud as possible usually before filing the case so the amount is as low as possible in the complaint.  But in high profile cases, they won't even do that usually.

Taxes and the financial system are two things you don't want to mess.with in the US.
