Re: Summer of 2014
I think the desire to get another GK is to do with Mignolet and not Jones. I would give Simon about 77/100 for this season and would understand if Rodgers wants some competition for him. Competition that's better than Jones, but not called 'Reina'.
I'm very pleased if Can will be our first signing, he looks like he might be a good player and buying from Germany is smart, the cost:quality ratio is certainly better than in England. Then again, I was pleased when we signed Aspas, so let's see how Emre slots in.

£5m and £35+k a week for a keeper who likely will only start cup matches or play if Mig gets injured... that just doesn't make much sense to me.

Specially when Jones have done that quiet commendably.

Jones hasn't done that at all, and he's certainly not provided competition for the starting spot.iftikhar wrote:RedOranje wrote:£5m and £35+k a week for a keeper who likely will only start cup matches or play if Mig gets injured... that just doesn't make much sense to me.

Brad Jones appears to be a wonderful guy and an incredibly positive personality in the dressing room, but he's not providing anything but emergency cover. Keep in mind that two years ago (at age 30), Jones was the third choice keeper behind Doni and Reina. since then, he's come in and played well in a short stretches and the odd cup game. But, he's done nothing to provide competition for the starting position. With a mature keeper such as Reina, you can make the argument that competition will only unsettle your clear #1. However, with a younger and more inexperienced keeper, the constant pressure to perform can help them avoid stagnation and maximize their potential.
Therefore, the argument is that you're not paying £5m and £35k a week just for a cup keeper but for the development of your true number one, as well. I'm not necessarily arguing that Vorm is the right move, or that we need to spend that figure on an aging/established keeper. That said, I do see the point of upgrading at the GK position, especially considering the feeling that Mignolet would benefit from competition.

Re: Summer of 2014
Signing an inconsistent and injury-prone keeper who is ostensibly in his prime but still no better than the current number 1 is not the type of move that has a long-term benefit. And I'm not convinced by this "provide competition" argument either, as A) not every player responds well to such pressure and B) there's a notable chance that Vorm wouldn't respond well to such a role.
It's a gamble, and an expensive one at that. The direct cost and potential negative side effects outweigh the supposed benefits... it is not what I would consider a smart or even terribly logical move; especially during a summer where so many other needs are more pressing.

Sign Fabianski for free?
Better than Jones at least.

Fabianski is leaving Arsenal to find regular first team football... I can't imagine him immediately joining us to once again be back-up.

Re: Summer of 2014
If we want to go for a keeper that's supposed to offer serious competition for Mignolet, I struggle to come up with a better name than Cardiff's Marshall.

The move for Can has stalled over the player's wage demands, according to reports from the Liverpool Echo.

Moreno (Sevilla LB) is also in the news, Marca reports Liverpool to agree a 16.25m pounds deal with Suso either on loan or permanent.

If Suso is permanent, then that's a terrible deal. In about a year Suso will be worth more than Moreno ffs.

You vastly over value youth on a consistent basis.
Anyway, 16m sounds steep for a LB even without a player tossed in. I don't know much about him, is he really worth what would be (as far as I know) one of the higher fees for a fullback?

Re: Summer of 2014
Suso is only 1 year younger than Moreno. He was voted as 2nd best young talent in La Liga this season playing for a unbelievably shit Almeria side.
If he was playing for Sevilla and we were in for him, I bet you he'd command something similar to Alberto and Aspas this season and more next season.

Re: Summer of 2014
We'd be paying 10m+ to sign Suso if he was actually playing for Almeria...
We're stupid when it comes to transfers, lol. Then again, it's a stupid source so I'd take it with a pinch of salt.
Emre Can would be great, but have no idea on the situation with his wage demands, or a lot in transfers in general as I've been really busy as of late and haven't really paid any attention to anything.

Re: Summer of 2014
Rakitic staying in the La Liga.
Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona all interested. 25m Euro fee on his head. Which is around 20m Pounds. Genuine wc talent. I'm sure in a couple of months from now we'll be hearing we were interested and find out he was the back up target for Lallana.

If that figure includes Suso, I guess it's alright. But Suso + 16.5 seems too steep.Moreno (Sevilla LB) is also in the news, Marca reports Liverpool to agree a 16.25m pounds deal with Suso either on loan or permanent.

Again, even if we bid 50m for Rakitic, he'll always go to La Decima club. It's not like FIFA when everyone is available.
I really hope we buy Lallana at any cost. I think he'll be absolutely brilliant from day one and it's clear Rodgers really wants him.
Also Times are reporting it's Suso ON LOAN as part of the offer. Will be interesting to see how Suso does in a better club

Re: Summer of 2014
Andy Hunter seems to be suggesting the €20m is the total value which includes Suso
The Anfield club’s bid is believed to be worth €20m in total, a figure that includes Liverpool midfielder Suso as a makeweight. The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at La Liga side Almería.
