The UEFA Coefficient Thread
The UEFA coefficient is an interesting formula. Today, Germany, England and Italy are very close all within 6 points. Spain is more than 20 points above Germany the leader of the next three. Italy, with only 3 CL teams is at a disadvantage at the outset because of the CL bonus (having only 3 teams eligible), but can make it up with more Europa League teams.
These 3 leagues are pretty much alone below Spain and above Portugal which is about 18 points below Italy.
Also interesting are historical points. Italy will achieve a near 4 point advantage over England next year when the 11/12 low calciopoli related numbers are dropped.

So, if Italy and England tie in points this season.... BPL will lose a CL spot for the 17/18 season?

No. If they tie in points this season, England will finish 3rd, and still have 4 Cl spots for 17/18.
Start of next season however Italy will then jump ahead with a 4 point lead as 11/12 expires, if England doesn't overcome it they will finish the 16/17 season behind Italy and lose the 4th spot for the 18/19 season.
There's a one season buffer between where you finish and what season it affects.

Still... England has it rough....
Imagine the disaster it would be for Arsenal, losing that 4th spot trophy.

In 7th place now
Great progress
The top 8 teams in Europe right now according to that list sounds about right with the exception of Benfica.

This is the coefficient taken after the first CL matchday, next season both Milan clubs will probably be out of the top 30

England 4.375
Italy: 4.000
The gap has decreased by nearly 0.7 points in just one date. England had 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses whereas Italy had 4 wins and 1 loss.

Good. Losing 4th spot would be the best thing to happen to EPL

It while take a while for it to change, Italy just doesn't have enough teams that are consistent in Europe.
It genuinely is like two bald men fighting over a comb.

Italy gained one point today, when 2011/12 is eliminated at the end of this season the results are
EDIT:
When 2011 are eliminated from the counting, Italy is above England currently.

Re: UEFA Coefficient development for the next seasons
Sure, but if Italy wants to get the 4th spot this season and not in the next one, they need to make up the 4 point gap with England. I think it will be tough, especially if so many EL teams keep fielding B teams and United could go far in the CL

Not a chance they do it this season. Not with only Juventus and Napoli actually being consistent and reliable.

Re: UEFA Coefficient development for the next seasons
It's not alltogether imposible, but I agree that it's not likely. It depends on the EL mostly. England has the fortune/misfortune of having had 8 teams qualify for european football, which means that every point an English side earns is divided by 8, and 2 teams are already out. Italy's points will be divided by 6 and only have 1 team out at this point. So this could play to Italy's advantage. On the other hand, England has more teams in the CL which means more bonus points, which perhaps evens this out. They definitely start with an advantage.

Actually, the best way for the EPL to get points is for all 4 teams in the CL to downgrade to the EL, and then go into deep runs.
There is no way in hell anyone other than the Tri-Teams doing well in the CL, which makes the EL the perfect place to gather points.
For Serie A to get the spot, there needs to be a colossal *bleep*-up from the EPL.
