If you've ever been to Scotland, or the North of England, you can't possibly believe Thatcher was right about anything.

You reckon the people in Scotland and North of England would enjoy good lives if they were still in the mining jobs, huh?

More than they would've enjoyed their current unemployment.

They also might've enjoyed one of the many other industrial-sector jobs that died once they were basically deliberately scrapped to collect money to throw at banks in central London.

Thatcher is arguably one of the worst prime ministers we have ever had. A vile person and single handedly nearly destroyed UK.

lol, that's just denial, dude. Thatcher saw that the cheap jobs, like the mining ones, were going to end up elsewhere, where technology was catching up and where labour was going to be cheaper. Either say no to economical development and stick to the low-level jobs or move forward. If the UK wanted to keep up and grow economically, it had to make the transition to the high-end jobs and service economy. That's what Thatcher saw and that's what she did, correctly. She's only hated by people who don't understand how these things work - and who think the UK could somehow have the mining jobs and the like with country's income level. That just does not compute.

Post by RealGunner Mon Aug 01, 2016 5:04 pm

Her time at the office led to one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. She destroyed our manufacturing industries. People couldn't afford to buy houses because of how the interest rates were under her and those who were paying their mortgages couldn't anymore because of how high the rates went up to. She introduced cuts which led to schools increasing prices for school dinners and cutting out free meals which put further burden on families. Her taxation policies benefited the rich massively but affected the poor even further. UK had the highest youth unemployment rate under her where UK saw more young beggars on the street than ever before. Crime rate doubled under her. Called Nelson Mandela a terrorist. Wanted to re-introduce capital punishment. Wanted to control the media and tried her best to destroy BBC.

And she started privatising NHS (tories wet dream though tbf) and if she stayed in power for longer, NHS would have been privatised years ago.

There is a reason why she tops nearly every 'most hated PM in UK ever' polls.

There is a reason for that, yes, and it's because the majority of people don't understand how these things work.

What you said is true, though. In a nutshell it can be said that Thatcher wanted to move the UK from an industrial economy to a service economy.

It meant a great shake up. It meant a lot of jobs lost (in the short term). The great shake up had some side effects - like schools increasing the price of meals.

The capital punishment thing she only suggested for the fight against the IRA - when there was a real terrorism fight going on in Ireland between the Republic and the North.

But really, by far the biggest reason Thatcher is hated is because of her attack on the workers' unions and the industrial sector jobs. And what has happened to those jobs in the years after her reign? Have they flourished in the UK after her? No. They have disappeared naturally. One by one, year by year. Thatcher saw that trying to salvage them would be very expensive, would hamper the economy in the long run by keeping people in the low-end jobs instead of moving them into the high-end jobs, while the world would move on and leave the UK trailing. The sectors Thatcher attacked have disappeared from the UK on their own after her. If anything, she was a visionary that, in the long run, saved the UK a whole lot of money.

To have the balls to insult a man like Mandela. Wow.

Shouldn't we tell our opinion without insulting? Or we just have to insult back if we felt insulted? I don't think this attitude could ever bring something good for the community. It's not about right or wrong, it's just about the way we express ourselves. Of course you are free to say anything and I know that nobody asked me of my opinion, but I feel that it is my duty as a human being to act if I see harm being done at any level. So with all the respect, I know you can do much better. Thumbs up

I almost feel insulted. Mandela was a role model and an example for all of us. All of a sudden he's a terrorist because he wanted to end the apartheid? Also, he himself directly caused no deaths in technicality and let's ignore that the blacks were subjugated by the whites in a way that made Israel Palestine look cute, but hey, conservatives gonna conserve. They will fight for their (backwards) values to the end and they need to be called out on it.

Saying that you consider Mandela a role model, explaining your thoughts, giving your arguments in a nice way is much better than calling people different ways and insulting them. I say this because I also insulted people on this forum and I realized that it didn't help at all, on the contrary, it made me suffer by being full of hatred. We don't deserve to invest our good energy with such things like insulting or saying harsh words about somebody. Although, we will naturally continue to do so, but that's why we are not alone in this world, to warn each other so we can prevent some unwanted situations. Isn't this how Nelson Mandela would want us to act? Smile

I wasn't talking about why he did things. I'm talking about what he did. and if you look up the word terrorism and look at the things he did he was a terrorist. now you might think its fine to blow shit up and murder people as long as you have a good reason to do it and that's fine. that's your opinion.

Hm... Aren't you one of the people who defend the US 2nd amendment for the reason that armed civilian people can fight against a (unjust / oppressive / etc) government with deadly force by that? Isn't it just what the above people did? hmm
