Re: Phil Jones
Why are liverpool fans all over zee interwebs kicking up a fuss about united"nicking their target"?
Jones would've been playing his football in north london if united hadn't stepped in with a late bid.
If anyone should be pissed of at fergie and jones, it should be Arsenal fans.
Oh and, ill just leave these here....

Fee is 17 million + ..
Because Blackburn have stated a record deal on their official site..
And Blackburn's record deal is 17 million for Duff i guess..

Steve Keane has said the deal is 20M.

Reports saying add ons were included in his buy out contract. We will know officially in the coming days.
Edit: as azzurres has said too. Lots of things floating about regarding the fee. we will know in the next few days. IMO, I think we have paid just 16.5 mill for him.

Didnt i say the fee is 17 mill +
Its a record, As mentioned on the BFC site, Which means it has a greater/potential value more then 18 million, as Duff went for 17.5 to some one i guess from Blackburn..

Phil Jones the right choice?
Manchester United's and Sir Alex's continued investment and faith in youth was once again showcased by the arrival of Phil Jones from Blackburn. However, the question I would like to put out to everyone is if he was the best option for United to buy.
While undoubtedly a good (albeit overpriced) player, I feel that in Smalling and dare I say Evans, I feel we have adequate cover in central defence...at least I saw no reason to justify a 16 million pound outlay on a player who would be behind Vidic, Ferdinand and Smalling in the pecking order.
An alternative which definitely comes to mind is Jack Rodwell who was a previous target of Sir Alex Ferguson. Yes, he was injured for the majority of the 2010/2011 season resulting in him missing numerous matches whilst hampering his performances in those in which he did play. However he plays in a more advanced role, featuring prominently at DM and in more recent times more advanced positions.
There are other options internationally as well: Thiago Alcantara, Vidal and Shinji Kawaga a few more examples.
Any other ideas, or do you think that Jones was the right option for United.

Re: Phil Jones
I am overjoyed with this transfer.
When I saw him playing against us, I really thought he was something special and I feared Liverpool or Chelsea would get him.
Ferguson's plan was to buy him next year but with Liverpool lurking, he had to act now.
Now, there is no doubt the defense position is covered, but Ferdinand is injured quite often now so hopefully we get to see Jones alternating with Smalling, plus he can still play DM like Pepe from Real Madrid.
If it does not impact our search for a CM then great great transfer. If the bank are empty because of him, then I would be inclined to agree with you.

Re: Phil Jones
Lets break it down. Young cost an estimated 17 million pounds; a figure which could rise to 20 million based on performances and what not. Additionally Phil Jones cost 16 Million resulting in a total outlay of 33 million pounds so far. After 33 million has already being spent I fail to see how a large transfer to obtain a good CM can be completed. With Sneijder needing wages of 200k and a transfer fee of 35 million, Ashley Young's wages and Phil Jones is transfer may/will impact future signings.
While the sales of Gibson, O'Shea and Wes Brown may generate capital, in my opinion it would not be enough if Sneijder (my preferred CM/AM) arrives and the subsequent DM I think we need in that scenario. Thats why I thought Jones may have been the incorrect signing (I do not in any way say he isnt a great player). He may be able to play DM, but his future lies at the heart of defence.

Re: Phil Jones
he's an excellent purchase. i've been a fan of jones since he broke into the blackburn side and it was clear to see the potential and quality he has. there is a reason why arsenal and liverpool were both after him. he is very versatile and i believe him and smalling are the future cb partnership of united and england.
on the financial side dont believe the newspapers, we still have money to spend. hopefully this seals the end of evans' united career.

Re: Phil Jones
As Ferguson did not expect to have to shell for Jones this summer, I can see talks between him and the Glazers, about paying more this summer, and less the next.
As for the DM position, it is also a position quite filled, Fletcher and Carrick will fight for the one spot, if both are injured we have Hargreaves - no I'm kidding - Park can play there as his stamina is endless and we all know how he can defend.

Re: Phil Jones
when yout think about we haven't really spent much over the last few years. i remeber being disapointed the last two summers that we haven't bought anyone that would improve the team but once again fergie prooves to me why he is the big dog. how many teams is it now that ferguson has built at this club, probably more than 5. greatest manger in world football history. if we sign a decent cm i dont think fegie will need to spend another penny for the next 2 - 3 years.

Re: Phil Jones
I know it seems weird but Chris Smalling and Jones are not really fighting for the same position. If Ferdinand gets injured SAF would prefer to have Smalling playing, as he is the more similar to Ferdinand and will complement Vidic's skills better. However, if Vidic get's injured (touch wood), than I think Jones will play as he is more similar to Vidic the "physical CB".
We also need a DM like him who can be a real nuisance. Fletcher wasn't that great this season before he fell ill. And Carrick can now play as a CM where he might be more comfortable.

Re: Phil Jones
My favourite signing of the transfer window so far. For the long term, this transfer and price we paid for him will be looked on as a bargain. We've got our future captain here + captain of England imo.
I first noticed how good he is when he single handedly killed our title hopes in the 09/10 season by putting in a super human defensive display to keep us from scoring in the 0-0 v B'burn match. He was reading every bit of play our attack was making, heading everything away, intercepting everything- Phenomenal.
Last season he was brilliant against us too. In the u21 games, it was him and Smalling that stood out the most.
This guy's potential, once honed and developed at United by the coaches + Rio and Vidic, will be brilliant and he will go on to be our CB for many, many years hopefully. We all saw just how fantastically Smalling has developed and is already looking like he can be our 1st choice cb along with either Vidic or Rio. Jones will be the same.
16 mill is a bargain imo. He has all the attributes to succeed at the club and the fact that both Arsenal and LFC wanted him, but he chose us instead, makes him a legend already in my eyes.

Mostly cb i guess, but he can play as a DM too. Bit too early to tell tbh as we don't know what plans SAF will have for him.
If I was you, I would gamble and select him as a CB.

Played as a CB last match, if that's anything to go by.
But KSA is probably right, it is a bit too early.

I thought he was excellent the other night, baring in mind he was deployed as a RB. Got more confident as the game went on and when he moved into the CB position.

RB, CB and DM, I think we've found our new O'shea, but not as versatile, but of better quality.
