"I just think that in every position Barcelona have a player who just works. I don't think Sergio Busquets is the best defensive midfielder in the world but for Barcelona he is the perfect player because of the way he plays. I can also name a few Barcelona players who wouldn't get into the United team because it is a different culture and style of play."

He is great in Tiki Taka thing. but as lone DM, he isn't good enough. he can't tackle, he can't fight, he can't win the balls on the air, etc....

LM, what exactly do you mean by WC? and what position? CB or DLP? Using the word defensive MF for busquets is like calling Vidic a ball playing CB. Busquets is Guardiolas heir and he is a deep lying playmaker. He is NOT a defensive MF anchorman ala Makelele. He is probably up there with the best deep lying playmakers. Would say he is slightly below Xabi in somethings, only because he gets far more protection. Pirlo is the standard in that position.

But seriously, I do want to know who you rate higher... and the argument of 'he is perfect for Barcelona but not for others is invalid, because he does play for Barcelona and he does perform at that level. Football is a team game, if it takes other players and the team to help you play at a higher level it doesn't make you an inferior player to those who can't play at your level with different players.

A benchmark for a world class player is that he should be able to improve (possibly drastically improve) almost any team if he were to play for them.

Do people think Manchester City would be a better team with Busquets in midfield? Real Madrid? Milan? Manchester United? Bayern Munich? Arsenal?

If you were to replace Lucas in Liverpool with Busquets I think they'd be a worse side.

As Gudjohnsen said, I think Busquets is perfect for his role in Barcelona but he's not a WC footballer who would be able to improve most teams in the world.

See my previous post, do you honestly think that Busquets would be a huge success anywhere except Spain and Barcelona where 65%+ possession every game is the norm?

Barcelona is the only club in the world where Busquets would start ahead of Mascherano because of his possession qualities. In any other team Mascherano would be the starter.

I understand your point... but if it wasn't for Barcelona's style, Xavi Hernandez would not be revered either. He is possibly one of the best midfielders of all time and yet if the team isn't played to his strengths he is less than half the player he can be.

I think this idea of 'world class' as a blanket definition is a bit silly because we all disagree on it so much. So many players in the wrong teams would fail...

I think many teams could accommodate Busquets' qualities quite easily. Pretty much any team other than teams requiring purely athletic/running DMs would want him. He wins the ball, he holds his position expertly and always offers that extra brick to the wall of defence, he rarely loses the ball or misplaces a pass and he is an excellent deep-lying playmaker in the sense that he always begins plays for his team from deep.

If you are playing hoofball or want someone who just runs about and is all action he is not your man, but he is still a marvellous player and I believe he is good enough to warrant this 'world class' title, whatever it may mean.
